Session I

Topic – Meaning and Aspects of Research

Speaker – Dr.Chetan Singai, Dean, School of Public Policy and Legal Studies, Chanakya University, Bengaluru, Chief Consultant and Convenor, National Curriculum Framework, Ministry of Education, Government of India

Summary

In the first session of the Research Methodology Course , Dr.Chetan Singai gave an overview of what research means and what it implies for all those who are a part of it. Research is a systematic and rigorous activity to gather appropriate information on specific subject. According to Dr.Singai, the purpose of research is to contribute to the  body of knowledge ,solving problems, critical analysis and policy formulation and hence the research problem must be identified and we need to evaluate it in terms of output. All the participants were asked to state the research problems they were working on. This was followed by an incredible exchange of ideas. The activity was engaging and helped the participants assess the effectiveness of their problem statements as this only will set the pace for further work in research . Dr. Singai also shared titles of books on research methods that the scholars can go through to brush up their knowledge on research  . He briefly touched upon the aspects of ethics and skills that play a key role in the realm of research .

The session was ideal in terms how any research methodology course should begin .The participants really benefited from it.

Session II

Topic – Research Design

Speaker – Dr.Chetan Singai , Dean, School of Public Policy and Legal Studies, Chanakya University, Bengaluru, Chief Consultant and Convenor, National Curriculum Framework, Ministry of Education, Government of India

Summary

The second session taken by Dr.Chetan Singai was on research design which is the blueprint for conducting any research. It is a process that starts with identification of the problem and specifies how one has navigate the complexities of research. Dr.Singai stressed upon the fact that in case of research design the cardinal rule is “no one size fits all” .Each research work has its unique approach and requirement ,so it is the duty of the research to figure what will ensure effectiveness, validity and reliability of the design. Hence, it is essential to always conduct a pilot study to determine the usefulness of a particular design.

Dr. Chetan pointed out the challenges and trends in modern research design. He used the expression ‘Research(Re)Design’ to lay emphasis on the significant transformation in the field of research due to advancement in technology ,globalisation and interdisciplinary approaches. A researcher must take transparency, reproducibility, decentralised research networks and ethical concerns into account in order to deliver perfection. The session was truly insightful.

Summary

The third session of the day was conducted by Dr.Shweta Kastiya, Associate Professor, Department of Management Studies IIS (deemed to be University), Jaipur. The participants were exposed to the idea of formulation of research problems. Dr. Kastiya touched upon some very important aspects of the formulating research problems. Variables must be in tune with the problem statement otherwise it might mislead the audience and this will affect the subsequent steps of the research work. It is essential to check the viability of research work .We should try to avoid a problem that has potential but is not feasible for the researcher. Feasibility analysis helps to deal with all the roadblocks in the path of research.

Dr. Kastiya explained how the exact tool of data collection can make research a smooth activity. She cautioned the participants against fabricated and fake data as this would jeopardise the purpose of research and technology can reveal all the anomalies easily impending the research.
