The Department of Sociology was established in 1995.
The Department offers Sociology and Women's Studies as electives in B.A. programme, M.A in Sociology , Master of Social Work and Ph.D in Sociology and Social Work. The Department also recognizes the growing demand for trained manpower in social service sectors to work as community welfare officers, social development specialists, social workers etc. as well as the need for basic research in Sociology.The curriculum has been designed to develop a critical understanding of social issues among students thereby training them to act as change agents and make meaningful contribution to society. Specialization is offered in major fields like Rural Sociology, Urban Sociology, Tribal studies, Globalization and society.High standards of teaching are maintained through use of ICT, student centric methods and equity pedagogy. Sociology is one of the popular subjects for civil services. The department also imparts valuable skills to the students to pursue the following career paths after MA Sociology and MSW:
