Objective: 

 The course plan aims to provide exposure to the fundamentals of various research techniques and methods. It develops an understanding of the basic assumptions in adopting different methodologies for different types of research. The programme of study is designed to introduce students to broad areas of research.

Unit I: 
  • Hypothesis: Concept and Types; Sources and Utility
  • Difference between a Hypothesis, a Proposition and a Theory; Difficulties in the formulation of Hypothesis.
     
Unit II: 
  • Meaning, Components- Concept, Variable, Process of building theory.
  • Models and Paradigms-Meaning, Functions and Types
  • Relationship between Theory and Research
     
Unit III: 
  • Logic in Social Inquiry; Elements of Logic,   Types of Logical explanations-Deductive,    Inductive and Retroductive.
Unit IV: 
  • Content Analysis and Projective Techniques: Meaning, Characteristics and Types.
  • Triangulation(Mixing Qualitative and Quantitative Methodologies):Meaning and Characteristics of Mixed Methods.
  • Comparison between Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods.

  • Writing Social Research Report
